- Rebodied by renowned coachbuilder
- Photographic records
- Elegant and stylish
First registered in July 1936 and fitted with a Park Ward four door saloon body, ‘B65GP’ was to cost John Newbould Esq. the grand total of £1,510 - that would be £1,150 for the chassis and £360 for PW body. A sum that, at that time, could have bought a row of five cottages.
Moving forward to the early 1980s when this Bentley was bought in Ireland and returned to the UK where, with a little help from the Bentley Drivers Club, it was reunited with its original registration number. Thereafter, a complete restoration was undertaken including the commissioning of a brand new body in the sporting style of Vanden Plas. The work was trusted to the renowned workshops of Roevin Engineering based in Stretford Manchester and overseen by Roy Ashton.
Now a small aside, many of you will recognise our own George Turner, the proverbial font of all knowledge when it comes to cars of this era. George tells us that he used to work for Roevin Engineering and knew Roy Ashton and his team very well. However, he was not there when our car went through Roy’s workshops but, incredibly, he has known this car and its owner since its repatriation from Ireland. When told that ‘AKY 820’ was on its way to us, George pulled out a photograph of the very vehicle taken at Oulton Park in 1983, small world eh!
You must come and have a good look at the photographic history of the restoration, to see and understand how Roy Ashton’s team of craftsmen have created this wonderful motor car. We are informed that there might be additional history files that are, at the moment, unaccounted for but even if they are not found the photo album tells the whole story and George will be able to identify who’s who and who did what.
Considering that all the work took place over 40 years ago, the car itself is in outstanding condition, showing little sign of wear to either the bodywork or the oxblood leather interior. The all-weather gear is complete and in good order, the wheels and tyres require no attention, and the chrome work glitters like new. The signature Bentley grill looks fantastic with just enough nickel plating showing through the chrome to validate its age. A new battery was recently fitted and the car starts easily, and the engine is virtually silent when running.
