The MGB, a classic British sports car, has a rich and fascinating history. Produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) from 1962 to 1980, the MGB quickly gained popularity and became an iconic symbol of British automotive design. It succeeded the MGA and was available in various body styles, including roadster and coupe. The MGB featured a sleek, aerodynamic design and boasted impressive performance for its time. It was powered by a range of engines, starting with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder and later versions incorporating larger displacements. The MGB became a favourite among sports car enthusiasts due to its combination of style, affordability, and drivability. Over its production span, the MGB underwent several updates and improvements, including safety enhancements and engine modifications. Today, the MGB continues to be cherished by classic car enthusiasts worldwide, representing a bygone era of British motoring excellence.

We are delighted to offer this 1974 MGB GT in Glacier White with tan interior. Built in May 1974 but not registered until September of that year, this would have been one of the last "chrome bumper" models. Our vendor has owned the car for 11 years and in that time has undertaken extensive restoration and refurbishment work, mainly in 2015/16. The engine and gearbox were removed and the cylinder head converted for unleaded petrol. The carbs were overhauled and retuned. Items replaced included clutch master and slave cylinders, clutch plate and thrust bearing, heater unit, water pump, distributor cap, spark plus and leads, coil, fuel pump, drive belts. Whilst the engine was out the engine bay had all rust removed and was primed and painted - an attention to detail that is a measure of our vendor. The suspension was refreshed with new shocks, springs, anti-roll bar and axle back plate and the brake pads and discs renewed. Cosmetically, the rear bumper was re-chromed and the front bumper and all over-riders replaced, a new front valance was fitted and the rear valance repaired and resprayed. Any rust areas were removed and the areas primed and repainted and the Webasto-style roof was repaired. The Draylon seat fabric was replaced with vinyl and the interior lifted with the addition of a wood dash and cappings. Extra sound insulation was added under the carpets.

Although this is now an older restoration the car still looks great. The vinyl on the roof is smooth and the sunroof section appears free from any obvious damage. It sits on the correct Rostyle wheels wrapped in matching Davanti rubber. The chrome all looks very presentable. There is a small bubble on the door and another on the bonnet but the seams on the wing-tops look to be in good order. The interior presents well with the nicely finished vinyl seats free from rips and tears and the woodwork looking good. Finishing touches are a handsome wooden wheel and gear knob. The car benefits from the desirable overdrive. The vendor has fitted a fire extinguisher - a sensible addition to any classic car.

The car comes with V5C, current and old MOTs, a large file of invoices, heritage certificate, 2 sets of keys and a photographic record of the restoration.

There’s a reason why MGBs are perennially popular in the classic car world - they’re affordable, simple, parts are cheap and readily available and there’s a mass of help and information from the owners clubs. They make an ideal introduction for the first-time classic owner or an easy to maintain, sunny day car for the enthusiast. This car represents great value as the vendor has clearly lavished love and money during his ownership, making it a very strong example.
