We are indebted to the vendor for supplying the following information:
“The previous owner of this vehicle, the magnificently named Bartholemew William Aldwinkle, bought this car from Bristol's Kensington High Street showroom in 1980. It had just one previous owner. Mr Aldwinkle kept the car for forty two years, he sold it via an auction, driving the car from his home in Stamford to the auction venue in Derbyshire, from where I purchased the car in 2022. The vehicle, whilst driving and presenting extremely well, had a very worn and tired interior; the leather was dry and cracked, and the wood trim and dash were in need of repolishing and lacquering. I stripped out the entire interior, including the headlining. The seats and door cards were retrimmed in high-quality leather (no vinyl), and a new panelled head lining installed, similar in style to a Bentley Brooklands. New interior door handles and a centre console incorporating a glove locker were also fitted, finished off with new high quality carpets. The whole interior was done to a very high standard, no expense spared.
I fabricated and fitted a new grill to the front which I think suits the car better, but the original bars and lights are available should anybody wish to reinstate them. The wheels were also replaced with alloys with 20mm spacers, but the original wheels (with tyres) are also supplied with the car. All-in-all this is an outstanding low-ownership example of these exceptional high-quality cars, with a unique registration number itself valued at £4,000 - 5,000.”
This Bristol 411 was originally delivered on the 5th January 1972 by Bristol Motors Kensington to Wolff Olins Ltd, located in Dukes Road, London, and was originally equipped with a rare metal sliding sunroof, adding to its uniqueness and charm. On the 26th March 1980, the car was acquired from Tony Crook by the previous owner. Initially, it served as a company vehicle before being passed into the private ownership. Interestingly, the vendor is only the third registered keeper of the vehicle since new. While under previous ownership, a significant amount of maintenance work has been performed by the renowned Bristol specialist, Spencer Lane-Jones Ltd. During the 1990s, the car was treated to a new gearbox and more recently new shock absorbers have been fitted to ensure a comfortable and smooth ride. Between 2014 and 2018, the Bristol 411 underwent a repainting process, which has revitalized its exterior appearance. Since then, the current owner has completely redone the interior, replacing the tired black original interior with a highly attractive Red leather interior with no expense spared.
These Bristols are criminally undervalued and rarely come to market, especially in such condition as this. Perhaps not one for the purists, but an extremely smart example that has been vastly improved. The 6.2-litre V8 sounds fabulous through the quad exhausts, a true gentleman’s cruiser that could grace any collection.
